A steppe grassland xeric to mesoxeric species which sometimes grows on limestones in the lower nemoral belt. In Transylvania it is actually encountered only in the north-eastern periphery of the Trascau Mountains (Cheile Turzii, Cheile Borzesti areas) where the steppe xeric grasslands get in touch with the low altitude calcareous massifs.
